Story SUMMARY: When the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020, it had the unforeseen side effect of driving people into the outdoors at a rate many land managers had never seen before. As businesses and restaurants were forced to shut their doors, people who needed a respite from lockdown found nature to be an ideal form of socially distant activity. Many of them came to The Nature Conservancy preserves. The influx of new visitors made preserve managers notice that many of the properties could serve and attract wider segments of the local population. And they are making changes. Across the organization—and even in the national parks system—there is a movement to make wild spaces more accessible and inviting for everybody.
